Thali

How complete is Thali?

Nobody has a full list of the world's dishes. Every household has its own, and most have never been written down. So Thali shows its working.

Where the list comes from

Every item that Wikidata classes as a dish, a food or a drink and that has an English Wikipedia article; plus our own list of the dishes each country is known for, so that small countries are not crowded out by large ones.

Country overviews written: 85 of 184. Photos: 1,081 of 1,141 dishes have a free-licence photo; the rest show a drawn plate until one is found.

New pages are written every day, best documented first, with each continent taking its turn. Wikidata is re-read every week for foods added since.

What is missing

Dishes with no English Wikipedia article are not here yet. That leaves out a great deal of home cooking, and it favours countries that are well covered in English. By region so far: Asia 395, Europe 327, North America 169, Africa 146, South America 88, Oceania 16.

Countries with the fewest dishes so far: Antigua and Barbuda (0), Central African Republic (0), Comoros (0), Eswatini (0), Monaco (0), Papua New Guinea (0), Saint Kitts and Nevis (0), Saint Lucia (0), Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (0), San Marino (0), Solomon Islands (0), Tuvalu (0), Vatican City (0), Andorra (1), Bahamas (1), Bahrain (1), Barbados (1), Burundi (1), Chad (1), Democratic Republic of the Congo (1).

If you know a dish we should add, write to thali@cleartrust.cc.

The weekly plate

Every Monday: seven dishes you may not know, what the world is cooking this week, and one way of eating.
