Sources and photo credits
Thali stands on the work of volunteers who document the world's food in the open.
Facts
Wikidata (public domain, CC0) and Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0). Every dish page and country overview links to the article and the record it was written from.
Wording and attribution
Thali does not copy text. Dish pages and country overviews take their facts from the Wikipedia article named at the foot of each page and are rewritten in Thali's own words. A check compares each page with its source; any page that carries over more than a short phrase is rewritten before it is shown. Because the pages are adapted from Wikipedia, they credit the article and its contributors, link to the original, and are shared under the same CC BY-SA 4.0 licence.
Photos
All photos come from Wikimedia Commons. Only freely licensed images are used: public domain, CC0, CC BY and CC BY-SA. Each photo on a dish page is credited beside it with its author and licence and links to its page on Commons. Small pictures in lists link through to the page that carries the full credit. Photos may be resized; no other changes are made. If a photo is yours and should not be here, write to us and it will be taken down.
Drawn plates
Where no free photo exists, the page shows a plate drawn by Thali from the dish's name. It is a placeholder, not a picture of the dish.
Good reading
The articles listed under "Good reading" on a dish page are ones its Wikipedia article cites, from publishers such as the BBC, Britannica, Smithsonian Magazine, The Hindu, Serious Eats, Saveur and UNESCO. Thali shows the headline and the publisher and links to the original; it does not copy the article.
Ways of eating, the food calendar, seasons and the glossary
Original text by the Thali desk, written with AI assistance. Each way of eating lists its sources. Festival dates are worked out by rule (fixed dates, Easter, and the Hebrew, Islamic, Chinese, Persian and Ethiopian calendars); days set by other lunisolar calendars use published dates. Islamic dates depend on the sighting of the moon and can shift by a day.
Map
Country outlines are from Natural Earth (public domain).
News
The news wire shows only a headline and the outlet's name. Every link leads to the original publisher.
Typefaces
Young Serif and Instrument Sans, both under the SIL Open Font License.
