Langar
The free community kitchen of a Sikh gurdwara, where anyone may eat.
Also: guru ka langar
Langar is the shared meal served at every Sikh place of worship. It was begun by Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, around the start of the sixteenth century. Everyone sits together on the floor in rows, whatever their religion, caste or wealth, and eats the same simple vegetarian food. Volunteers cook, serve and wash up. The kitchen at the Golden Temple in Amritsar feeds many tens of thousands of people every day.
