Side dish
A smaller dish served alongside the main item of a meal.
Also: side, accompaniment
A side dish supports the main food on the plate or table. It may add starch, vegetables, freshness or contrast. Chips, salad, rice, bread, beans and cooked greens are common sides in Western meals. The idea of a main and its sides does not fit every cuisine. In many Asian and African meals, the staple, such as rice or fufu, is the centre, and the meat, fish and vegetables are what accompany it.
