Chhath
A strict fast for the sun, with offerings of thekua and fruit made standing in the river.

What is eaten for Chhath
Chhath is the festival of the Sun and Chhathi Maiya, kept above all in Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh and Nepal. The date shown is the main day, when offerings are made to the setting sun, and again at sunrise the next morning. Those who keep the vow fast for about 36 hours without water. The evening before, they eat one meal of kheer made with jaggery and roti. The offerings are cooked with great purity on a new stove: thekua, a hard sweet biscuit of wheat and jaggery, with sugarcane, bananas and other fruit.
