Entree
In France and Britain, the starter. In the United States and Canada, the main course.
Also: entrée
Entree is a French word meaning entry, and it has two opposite uses. In France, and often in Britain and Australia, it is the first course that opens a meal. In the United States and most of Canada, it is the main dish. The split goes back to long formal French dinners, where the entree was a meat dish served early, before the roast. Travellers should check which sense a menu is using.
