A la carte
Ordering separate dishes from a menu, each with its own price.
Also: à la carte
A la carte is French for according to the menu. The guest chooses any dishes they like, and each is priced on its own. This gives the most freedom, and it usually costs more than a set meal of the same size. The phrase is also used when a main dish comes without side dishes, which must then be ordered separately. Its opposite is table d'hote, where one price covers a whole meal.
