Iftar
The evening meal with which Muslims break the daily fast in Ramadan.
Also: futoor
Iftar is eaten at sunset, right after the call to the evening prayer. Following the practice of the Prophet Muhammad, many people break the fast with dates and water. A fuller meal follows. What is served depends on the country: harira soup in Morocco, haleem and fried snacks in South Asia, lentil soup in much of the Middle East. Iftar is a social occasion, shared with family, neighbours and the poor, often at mosques.
