Halal
Arabic for permitted. In food, anything Muslims may eat or drink under Islamic law.
Also: halaal
Halal means lawful or permitted. Its opposite is haram, forbidden. Islamic law forbids pork, blood, carrion and alcohol and other intoxicants. Meat from permitted animals is halal only if the animal was slaughtered in the prescribed way. Most plant foods, and fish according to most schools of law, are halal by nature. Packaged foods often carry a halal mark from a certifying body, since additives such as gelatin may come from forbidden sources.
