Sattvic diet
A diet from Hindu and yogic tradition built on foods thought to promote clarity and calm.
Also: sattvik, satvik
In Indian thought, sattva is the quality of purity and balance. A sattvic diet favours fresh, lightly cooked vegetarian food: grains, pulses, fruit, vegetables, milk, ghee, nuts and honey. It avoids meat, fish, eggs and alcohol. Many followers also leave out onion and garlic, which are classed as stimulating, along with stale or heavily spiced food. Temple kitchens and many ashrams cook this way. Food offered to a deity is usually sattvic.
