Vegan
A diet that leaves out all animal products, including dairy, eggs and honey.
Also: veganism, plant-based
A vegan eats only food from plants. That means no meat, fish, milk, cheese, butter, eggs or honey, and no additives made from animals, such as gelatin. Many vegans also avoid leather, wool and other animal goods. The word was coined in England in 1944 by Donald Watson and the founders of the Vegan Society. Vegans need a reliable source of vitamin B12, which plants do not supply, usually from fortified foods or supplements.
