Kosher
Fit to eat under Jewish dietary law.
Also: kasher
Kosher is a Hebrew word meaning fit or proper. Food is kosher when it meets the rules of Jewish dietary law, called kashrut. Kosher meat comes only from certain animals, slaughtered and prepared in a set way. Meat and dairy are never cooked or eaten together. Packaged foods carry a symbol from a rabbinical agency that has inspected how they are made. In everyday English, the word is also used loosely to mean legitimate.
